It’s the weekend, but there’s no rest for the wicked. Well maybe just a little bit as I could have a lie-in this morning! The rest was short-lived as (after the past couple of days work) I’ve an even bigger queue of pictures to edit, so much of the day’s been dedicated to doing just that.

I did tear myself away from my computer long enough to get my daily steps in, first by a trip to do some shopping (and a swift pint in my local) before returning home to collect Dawn so the pair of us could get out to stretch our legs and enjoy the local woodlands now the autumn’s hear – although the vast carpet of fallen acorns does make it fell like you’re walking on marbles sometimes, especially on slopes.

Now we’re having a quiet night at home. We’ve eaten home-made chicken curry from the freezer so no elaborate cooking was required, which has allowed us to relax. Now, whilst Dee’s watching ‘strictly’ on TV I’m back to editing pictures. Not exactly the ‘rock and roll’ lifestyle, but it works for us!

Today’s picture? It’s from my trip to South Wales. The evening light’s been spectacular, as this shot shows as the evening sunlight glints off the side of one of Stadler’s new Class 756s, throwing into stark relief the outline of the engine compartment compared to the rest of the train.

Today’s been a tying up of loose ends sort of day here at Bigland Towers, as tomorrow the pair of us head off for a much-needed break in Portugal. Dawn’s been busy sorting out stuff for her employer, Community Rail Network, whilst I’ve been busy editing pictures, getting others out to clients and chasing paperwork and potential jobs. To be honest, it’s not been a bad day to be stuck at home as the weather’s still deteriorating and there’s a distinct autumn chill beginning to creep in – which I’ll be happy to leave behind for warmer climes. It’s a much nicer 29 degrees in Faro tomorrow!

We’re in no panic to pack as we don’t fly from Leeds/Bradford until tomorrow evening, which gives us a relaxed morning. I should even have time for some blogging! But right now it’s time to enjoy our last evening here in the UK for a while. I’ll leave you with a picture from our last trip to Portugal, which we may get to reprise. Lisbon’s old trams are a delight to both travel on and watch pass by for entertainment value – especially as many people would ‘tram-surf’, like these three young women…

Here we are at the end of another working week with the August bank holiday looming. It’s been an odd week here at Bigland Towers, the classic curate’s egg. I’ve enjoyed getting out and about to see the latest High Speed 2 railway construction milestone in Birmingham (a full blog and pictures to follow shortly). The weather’s been rather indifferent and the nights are certainly drawing in, heralding next month’s change of season. I’d have liked to have got out more but there’s been a lot to do at home, partly because Dawn’s had a tough week so I’ve been on hand to offer tea and sympathy. Oh, and breakfast lunch and dinner as required!

On the bright side, I’ve also booked a fortnight in Portugal for the pair of us, starting in the first week of September. This will see us exploring the Algarve, Lisbon, Porto and the Douro valley, travelling by train. We’re both really excited about the trip, we just need to bottom out a few details – like where we’re actually going to stay! That will be one of the tasks this weekend as we’re not planning to go far over the bank holiday – although there will be some walking involved – somewhere.

Right now it’s time to sign off and relax. I’ll leave you with today’s picture, which is one I’ve been meaning to use for a few days. I have a 105mm micro lens which really doesn’t see much use nowadays (I’m hoping to put that right in Portugal), but I couldn’t resist digging it out when I saw this opportunity last week.

I’m sorry my blogging has become so erratic recently. It’s due to a combination of factors but not having anything to talk about/spleen vent isn’t one of them! This week’s been one of trying to adjust to a new routine. Dawn (who’d been off for a while) returned to work on Monday. I’ve made it my priority to help her to ease back into the routine so my time has been spent at home, acting as ‘house husband’ – providing sustenance and support as needed. In the meantime, I’ve been trying to get back to work myself and re-establish a routine that allows me to juggle exercise with productivity. It’s not always been easy – especially when the weather decides you’re not part of its plan. We didn’t suffer too much from the latest storm, but it certainly announced its presence, stripping leaves and branches off surrounding trees whilst dumping a fair bit of water in its wake. Can we have the cloud-free skies and baking weather back, please?

On the positive side, staying at home has allowed me to plan a few adventures – starting next week when I’ll be back on the rails. I’ve also had final details of a couple of really enjoyable commissions in Swindon and Llanelli which I’m looking forward to as I can dovetail them with other work. Then there’s plotting some more foreign expeditions…

In the meantime, I’m determined to ensure the rest of the week is a mixture of productivity and fun (so I’m not going to talk about politics – just yet) whilst enjoying the weekend. There’s a local event called CraggFest happening, which sound like an ideal bit of escapism. Expect a report and pictures.

Right now I’ll leave you with a picture that’s unconnected with what I’ve been talking about, but it’s from a country that may feature on our itinerary later this year. Greece. After all, what could be more Greek than cats – and old doors?

I’m slowly getting my mojo back. Today’s been a good day where I’ve felt I’ve actually achieved a few things and have lots to look forward to. Admittedly, not everything on my list was ticked off, but many of the major things were. That’s the problem with a long list! I’m reminded of an old boss from the days when I worked in Housing in East London. He used to say ‘if it’s an urgent file, leave it on my chair’. Within 6 months he had a second chair, one for him and one for the ‘urgent’ files! I’m not that bad (just don’t ask about my email inbox).

Having been busy at home all day I did manage to get out for a stroll this afternoon. All the shit and hassle recently has meant I’ve been lax at this – which has had an impact on how I feel. This week I’ve been determined to up the ante and hit as many targets as possible. Having picked up some shopping and nipped into my local pub for a ‘swifty’ my walk home took me past a superb crop of Blackberries which I couldn’t resist returning to pick. I’ve never known such a bumper crop this early in the season – especially as we’ve had such a dry year.

Tomorrow I’ll be up early to head down to Derby via Sheffield. Expect a rolling blog with lots of pictures – including previews of the biggest event that’s been organised to celebrate Railway 200.

I’m sorry I’ve been absent for so long but the pair of us have had a rather shitty time this past week. I won’t go into details other than to say the worst is over and we’re gradually bouncing back. On the bright side, we’ll now have more time to devote to the things in life we both want to do and enjoy. In my case that means getting back to travelling and blogging, so expect a renewed stream of rolling blogs from my travels as well as wry and/or splenetic observations on the state of UK politics.

Oh, then there’s the weather. My absence has coincided with a change in the weather. We’ve actually had a few much-needed rainy days here in the Pennines, although it doesn’t seem to have made much difference to the levels in local reservoirs, which remain perilously low. I’ve visited some recently and have a new reservoir blog in the pipeline – if you’ll pardon the pun.

On Thursday I’ll be heading to Derby, so expect a rolling blog and preview pictures of a very important event in the railway calendar to help celebrate the 200th anniversary of Britain (and the world’s) railways.

Anyways, it’s good to be back. I’ll see you at greater length tomorrow. In the meantime, here’s today’s picture which is of a lovely meal Dawn rustled up using steak from the excellent Bolster Moor Farm shop. We both love Thai food – and this fiery Thai beef salad is a favourite.

Lost in translation…

I’d an intention to write another reservoir blog today as Dawn and I were out exploring recently, looking at locations across Yorkshire and Derbyshire – but that’s going to have to wait until tomorrow as today’s proved to be a busy one – and the sun’s re-appeared (despite the threats of thunderstorms).

Having made the most of the day and called into our local to enjoy the sun and a pint in the packed beer garden we’re now back at home and I’m slowly copying more pictures of that infamous (by now) recalcitrant hard-drive. Today I’ve been moving old slide scans off it, which has prompted today’s picture. I have tens of thousands of pictures in my archive, going back nearly 40 years, so it’s easy to forget what I have sometimes, so the act of copying them over can jog my memory. This picture was taken in Georgetown, Malaysia back in 1992. I’ve always loved the fact we can be brought together or separated by the same language depending on circumstance – or spelling. Poorly translated menus have always been a favourite, but sometimes the humour is more basic. Here’s an example. I walked past this shop in Georgetown, Malaysia in May 1992 and immediately did a double-take.

If it was a delayed delivery, did you get to ask him where’s your fook hing coffin?

Sadly, this place is no longer there. He’s made his last coffin. Maybe it was his own – who knows?

Here we are, over the hump of 2025 and into the slide towards the end of the year. Not that I’m being pessimistic, but this has been quite a mixed year. Hopefully, all it can do is improve.

There’s only a short blog from me today as I’m out and about tomorrow, visiting various stations and lines in order to research a future article for RAIL magazine. This means getting up at silly o’ clock in order to be on an 06:00 train from Halifax. Expect a rolling blog from my travels.

Today, I’ve been busy at home, sorting out bits for next weeks travels, paperwork, and yet more picture collating. Remember my recalcitrant hard-drive? The little sod is playing ball today so I’ve been busy stripping pictures from it. Hopefully, I’ll  recover all I need.

In between all this the pair of us have been able to get out and enjoy the sunshine – although the wind has taken the edge off temperatures, although some people will see that as a welcome respite from the highs we’ve seen recently. Me? I’m used to tropical climes, so I’m happy as Larry in the heat! Even so, I can’t complain about the recent rains. It saves me watering the garden and depleting our perilously low reservoirs even more.

Now for today’s picture, which is one from the database I’ve just been recovering. They’re all from the year 2018. Looking back, it was a helluva busy one, with press trips to several countries, as well as holidays to the USA and SE-Asia. This image is from the press trip previewing Eurostar’s new service from London to Amsterdam. We were given access to the cab during different parts of the trip, and my picture shows the driver acknowledging a Netherlands railway service shortly after leaving Rotterdam on the 20th February 2018.

Apologies for the gap over the last couple of days but I’ve been busy with other projects, including a day out to see progress on the Trans-Pennine Route Upgrade (TRU) that saw me cover so much ground (over 35,000 steps) that there was no time to do a rolling blog worth its name. Today, I’ve been based at home. I’m in the final throes of ‘spring cleaning’ (OK, OK, I know it’s officially summer, but that’s when I started!) and sorting out plans for the rest of the year, but more of those anon.

The weather has begun to pick up again these past few days, but I’ve really enjoyed stopping to watch the changing skies over the Calder valley during my daily walk. We’ve had some really moody ones as the clouds and rain jostle for supremacy with the sun. They’ve been well worth getting caught by showers just to watch the displays – and get a few pictures like these;

I mentioned TRU earlier. I’ve lots of pictures in the editing queue, but here’s a taster.

A pair of Trans-Pennine Express Class 185s bound for Scarborough head East through Heaton Lodge Junction, where the line from the Calder Valley sweeps in from the left. There’s a huge amount of work going on here as a new alignment is being built. You can see the new cutting for the fast lines taking shape to the right of the big crane. The bridge I’m standing on to take this picture will soon be replaced by a new structure just in front of the camera. For those unfamiliar with the area, Heaton Lodge junction is between Deighton, Huddersfield (behind the camera) and Mirfield.

I know, I know – I’ve been abysmal at blogging these past couple of months. The worst I’ve been for years. It’s been caused by various reasons I won’t go into but I’m hoping to put matters right soon.

Right now, I’m typing this from home in the Pennines after another varied day. We’ve had a lot of wet weather this past week or so which has been one of the reasons I’ve not been out with the camera. Another has been trying to finally make sense of some of my picture databases and indulge in some consolidation after two decades of digital photography where files started to get a bit random. I’m now copying many of those odd files to one hard-drive in the hope that I can finally get rid of duplicates and realise exactly what it is I’ve got. Oh, then there’s the few 1000s of old slides which never got scanned which I’m desperately trying to whittle down to see what keeping and what isn’t!

In between all this I’ve sandwiched social events with Dawn’s family (and mine) plus work – and trying to make something of the sunny days when they re-appear. Then there’s plans for the future…

I’ll be back in London (albeit briefly) at the end of this week, combining business with pleasure – and the chance to catch up with some old friends. Now it’s the summer season my diary is looking increasingly busy but I’ve got to the stage where I’m going to pick and choose as I can’t do everything. There’s something to be said for slowing down and enjoying a less frenetic life – although there’s a lot of places I want to explore and things that I want to see – so watch this space.

According to some weather forecasts we’re due to have a bright sunny and very warm day here tomorrow. If so, expect a rolling blog as I head off for the day – although I’ve no idea where as yet. In the meantime, here’s today’s picture. Have a pigeon, travelling ticketless on a train, but clearly on the look-out for Inspectors…
