Not quite the sort of day I’d hoped for here at Bigland Towers, but I know Dawn feels exactly the same because poor Dee’s spent most of the curled up in bed as she’s been struck down by a migraine. Enter ‘nurse Paul’ stage left to try and persuade that sleep is the best thing and I’ll take care of the rest. I’ve not suffered from migraines since I was a teenager so I really count myself lucky – especially when I can see the effect they have on Dee. I really feel for her – especially when they’re as bad as this one, which is (thankfully) a rare occurrence but shit when it happens.
This means much of my day’s been spent in the office opposite the bedroom so I’m close at hand. That’s not been a problem as I’ve lots to do and the day’s been productive as I’ve all the archive pictures I’d mentioned edited and up on my Zenfolio website. You can find them here.
Tempting as it is – I’m not going to get into a political spleen-venting, despite there being so, so much to rant about right now. Rishi flying from London to Norwich by helicopter (don’t get me started). Nigel Farage advising his slack-jawed supporters how to avoid inheritance tax? Former Tory leader Ian Duncan Smith from the party of ‘law and order’ endorsing vigilantes smashing ULEZ cameras? The list is endless. This country’s becoming beyond parody. Still, in a couple of days I’ll be able to take a step back from the madness – sort of – to take a break in Cambridgeshire and act as guide for Dawn and her parents in a part of the country none of them know. I’ll still blog, but my spleen will be restrained – honest!
For now I’ll leave you with today’s picture. Well, when I think what it is – because right now I’ve no idea which one to use *quickly rummages through the files*. Ah, how about this? One of today’s tasks was to look up hotel recommendations for friends who’re off to India in December. I mentioned that when you’re staying in Delhi a hotel with a rooftop restaurant is ideal. This is the place I’ve recommended, in the Paharganj area. I’ve stayed there many a time. On this particular occasion back on the 7th December 2010 I was in the city arranging an interview with the head of the Delhi Metro Corporation whilst also proofreading a friends book. IIRC it was Michael Williams first ‘on the slow train’ series.

No late trains for me today. In fact no trains at all – unless you count pictures. Much of my day’s been spent editing yesterday’s images which you can find divided between the following galleries;
As well as the pictures I’ve relisted railway memorabilia and old slides on eBay which you can find here. I’ll add some new bits before the weekend but tomorrow I’ll be back out on the railways, ending up in Sheffield in the afternoon to discuss his forthcoming trip to India, a country I’ve spent rather a lot of time exploring in the past. There’s several places I want to have a look at tomorrow but my itinerary very much depends on the weather which isn’t looking great, especially out East so I may be visiting a few locations where sunny weather would actually be a handicap. Whatever I get up to I’ll be rolling blogging throughout the day.
In the meantime, here’s a picture from one of the locations I’ve been looking at. It’s 9 years since I was last taking pictures here and the railway scene’s changed quite a bit. This is a town where the railroad literally does run through the middle of the house. Well, town anyway. This is Belper, Derbyshire where the coming of the Midland Railway in 1840 split the town in two with this deep cutting.
On the 4th July 2014 a Northbound East Midlands Train to Sheffield passes a loaded coal train heading South. Once the lifeblood of freight on the old Midland Railway, you won’t see many coal trains thundering through Belper nowadays. In fact, looking at the timings for tomorrow (Thursday) I can’t find a single one. The Meridians are living on borrowed time too as they’re due to be replaced by new Hitachi built trains over the next couple of years.

I’ve had an eventful day so far. Having been up early to finish penning my Blyth and Tyne article for RAIL magazine I had to walk down to our Doctors for an appointment. Whilst sitting in the waiting room idly scrolling through websites I found that – not only were the new Merseyrail trains running in passenger service on the Wirral to West Kirby, but one of the Vivarail ex-London transport trains was definitely running on the Borders line from Bidston to Wrexham. It seemed like too good a chance to miss…
Within 5 mins of leaving the Docs I was at the station and soon heading Westwards to Manchester Victoria where I had scant minutes to wait for a Trans-Pennine service onwards to Liverpool Lime St, working on the trains all the way thanks to their wifi (are you listening DfT?). Tempting as it was to join Merseyrail at Lime St I walked to Central instead as it gave me chance to buy a cheap supermarket butty rather than pay station prices. Plus I got more steps in!
First stop on Merseyrail was Bidston where I was just in time to snap one of the Transport for Wales Class 230s arriving from Wrexham four minutes late. I’m told timekeeping is a real issue with these sets, especially towards the end of their diagram when they’ve banked delays on each circuit.
Plodding onward to the lovely Art Deco station at Hoylake and finding a 777 was on the service behind I realised this wasn’t the best place for photography due to sun, heavy shadows and the waiting room canopy. I wanted shots of passengers with the train so I ended up catching it to West Kirby.

There’s clearly teething problems introducing the sets. Not only is the set in use running late on each run from Liverpool but the destination blinds show “not in service”, much to passengers confusion! I let the 777 return to Liverpool and took a break to photograph some of the older units before catching up with set 004 on a return run at Meols where the same late running and PIS screen problems persisted.

I’ve had another run on the 777 but this time I’ve had channce to chat to the crew. Late running is due to two sets of doors being locked out of use because the level boarding steps are stuck. Apparently, this *may* (but don’t quote me, I’m only the messenger) be due to the floor panels in the vestibules above flexing under weight. So it’s taking longer for passengers to embark/disembark, hence the late running. Whatever, this doesn’t detract from the overall quality of the trains which Pip Dunn and I reviewed in a recent RAIL article. Let’s face it, the 507s weren’t without issue when they were introduced and the fleet underwent a series of modifications during its lifetime.
Now I’m making my way back towards home, although I do have a stop off in mind on the way…

Ever had one of those days? Again? After typing my last update I left the train at Conway Park so I could get a last shot of the 777 before adjourning to a fabulous old nautical pub near Hamilton Sq. Just as the train pulled out I thought ‘hang on, my pockets feel light’…
I’m wearing a Barbour fleece which is great apart from one thing. The pockets are as deep as the sinks in a Chiltern Railways Mk 3 coach loo. I’d managed to lose my phone on the train. Cursing under my breath I caught the next train to Hamilton Square so I could drown my sorrows if nothing else. As I passed through I told the barrier staff what I’d done. Straightaway Peter, the guy on the gateline made some phonecalls and established that a phone matching mine had just been handed in to the ticket office at James St. So, I caught the next train there with fingers crossed. Sure enough, George in the ticket office at James St had my phone. Some good Samaritan had found it and handed it in.
My faith in humanity restored I decided I’d had enough adventure for the day, but I did have a quick pint in the Crown Hotel outside Lime St just to unwind and indulge in some people – watching before heading home.

I’ve been kicking my heels in Manchester Victoria for nearly an hour as my Leeds connection was cancelled – just to put the icing on the cake! Now I’m praying the 20:21 just *might* be on time…

Yay! Homeward bound. This train’s on time and not too crowded so I’ve the luxury of a seat in a saloon. I’ve had an interesting if rushed day – and I’m still in possession of my phone (which is a bonus). I’ll add a few more pictures to the blog this evening just to round things off. Tomorrow will be a day for working from home without the pressure of jumping on and off trains. Instead I’ll be able to edit today’s pictures and get some filing done – as well as adding a few more items to eBay..

Ho hum. We’re 20 mins late leaving Rochdale due to being stuck behind another service. This is really not turning out to be my day, but it is an all too typical day on the railways at the moment.

The old order at West Kirby. 1978 built 507011 arrives at the town having worked a service around the Liverpool loop and return.Ignore the PIS, 777004 was very much in service, having deposited me at Manor Rd on the Wirral line to West Kirby, where this picture was taken. More old electric trains, this time in the shape of former Thameslink units 319383 and 319386. Built by BR in 1988 these 4- car sets are living on borrowed time as they’re due to be replaced by ex-West Midlands 3-car Class 323s just as soon as the units are released from their time around Birmingham.

The pair of us have had a weekend at home here at Bigland Towers but it could hardly be described as a relaxing ‘feet up in front of the telly’ kind of weekend as both of us have kept busy. Dawn’s been on a mission. Having borrowed a carpet cleaner from her parents (think of a Dyson, in that it looks similar, weighs about the same – but works) Dee’s been methodically going from room to room, washing each carpet. The cottage is only small but these things still take time. Whilst Dawn’s been occupied thus I’ve kept out of the way and worked in the garden or on the outside of the house. For once the weather’s been conducive to such activities – despite the tail the end of storm ‘Betty’ which brough gusting winds to the Pennines. I’ve managed to fill several bin-bags with plant based detritus, including the trimmings off a Jasmine plant which was blocking a lot of light from the front of the cottage. The only problem was as soon as I saw how much extra light was coming in through the windows I also realised how dirty they were! Cooking when the kitchen is stacked full of exercise weights and office equipment was fun but I still managed to rustle up a typical Indonesian Nasi Goreng which has kept us going over the weekend.
Today’s been occupied finishing off the chores from yesterday, with one major difference. Dee wanted to watch the football world cup match between England and Spain whilst she was working. This involved plugging herself into the commentary via her phone whilst having the video on her iPad. Me? I was outside up a ladder cleaning windows, which was quite amusing as the expletives and exhortations coming from inside the house made me think Dee had suddenly contracted Tourettes!
Now it’s Sunday night, the carpets are drying and the cottage is slowly coming back together ready for another working week. The kitchen’s no longer an obstacle course and all the rubbish has been taken to our local recycling centre so it’s time to relax. The only thing left for me to do is post a picture of the day but as the camera’s been tucked away all weekend, the question is what to choose from the archives. How about this one which is completely random and not related to anything I’ve been talking about?
I’ve been crap at finishing scanning all my old slides this year because other things (modern life, mostly) have got in the way. Well, that and trying to earn a crust. But, I have a stack of already scanned slides I’ve just never got around to editing and sticking on my Zenfolio site. Apologies for the lack of a blog yesterday but the time was taken up with a family funeral. My Mother-in-Law’s sister, known to the family as Aunty Dorothy passed away. A church service was held for her in Marsden, West Yorkshire before a private family cremation, after which everyone returned to Marsden to rejoin the other mourners for food and drinks – and chance to reminisce and celebrate her life.
Today, life goes on and I’m about to leave for Goole to meet up with my RAIL colleague Paul Stephen for a visit to the new Siemens factory there. I’ll update the blog throughout the day as and when…

I’m on the way. In contrast to yesterday the weather in the Calder valley’s very gloomy today with the clouds threatening yet more rain so I accepted Dawn’s offer of a lift to the station. This allowed me to catch an earlier train (the 09:37 instead of the 09:54) which was just as well as the 54 is already running 11 mins late, leaving me little time for my connection at Leeds.
My train was busy but not overcrowded – until it got to Bradford Interchange where families with gaggles of kids were waiting to join. I’d forgotten about the school holidays! The decible level aboard has now increased dramatically!
11:30.
My steed to Doncaster from Leeds. Another busy LNER ‘Azuma’ heading for London Kings Cross. According to an IPA report these trains were ‘unachievable’!
I’ve just left Doncaster. Getting here was painless as a quick dash between platforms allowed me to catch an earlier LNER service to Doncaster. Joining the train at the last minute was fun as I had to wade through confused families trying to work out where their seat reservations were. There’s lot of ‘newbie’ travellers around at the moment as it’s the season for them!
Having banked an extra 30 mins I was disappointed there was nothing of interest to photograph at Doncaster. The yard was virtually empty and the works siding contained nothing more than a couple of rusting Class 47s and a pair of Cross-Country Mk3 coaches – all in unphotogenic locations behind wire mesh fencing.
Now I’m aboard a Northern Class 170 heading for Scarborough via Hull which will get me to Goole…

When I titled this blog I had no idea how appropriate it would be…
I arrived in plenty of time to walk to the new Siemens train factory to meet Paul Stephen and be given our guided tour of the new plant. The site’s impressive. It’s not often you see a new railway centre rise from a brownfield site like this. The first trains for Transport for London won’t begin to roll off the production line until March 2024 but there’s work going on at the centre already and employment will begin to increase from September. I won’t go into detail (you’ll be able to read the full story in a future edition of RAIL) but the site’s already about far more than just building trains – a view confirmed with the discussions we had with the new Siemens joint MD – Sambit Banerjee. Here’s a mock-up of what the new TfL deep level tube trains will look like.

Things started to go ‘Pete Tong’ when Paul dropped me off at Goole station where all services were shown on the information screens as delayed or cancelled. Apparently Hull has suffered a major signal failure and all services to from the city are disrupted. So here I am, with no idea when I’ll be able to leave…

I’m now on the first train from Goole since lunchtime apparently. Lucky me! It’s a two car unit and its rammed – and sweaty!

The homeward leg. Having made it to Doncaster I didn’t hang around but jumped the first available LNER service to Leeds. Today’s problems made it unwise to tarry. The train was busy but not unbearably so as I still found a seat.
Once at Leeds I made a beeline for my train home which was a stark contrast to a 10 car LNER.

Northern had thrown out a 2-car 195 on a York-Blackpool North service. It’s ‘cosy’ to say the least – especially as some folk insist their bags entitled to a seat yet some folk would rather stand than challenge them. Not me, so some young bloke’s been told to sling his bag! I’m sat opposite a rarity nowadays and something I’ve not seen (or heard) for ages. A Grandmother’s reading a book to her Granddaughter. Ugh, another silly o’ clock start as I’m heading back North to Morpeth to explore the Blyth and Tyne railway for a future magazine article. I was up there the other week but the weather was appalling and we were trapped on a train where we could only see the work to rebuild the line for passengers from inside. This time I’ll be lineside and have a local guide for part of the trip. But first I’ve got to get to Morpeth. Feel free to keep popping back to see how the day unfolds…

After what was a lovely early morning stroll under cloudless skies and rising temperatures through deserted streets I’m now on Northern’s 06:17 from Halifax to Hull. This morning it’s operated by a long-standing member of the Northern fleet in the shape of 3-car 158753. This unit’s been allocated to the area for donkey’s years.
Whilst it’s been lightly loaded from Halifax it’s filled up at Bradford Interchange.

On arrival at Leeds I noticed TPE was up to its usual tricks of cancelling services. Thankfully, my next train was LNER’s 07:08 to Aberdeen, worked by a 9-car bi-mode ‘Azuma’ which had arrived empty from Doncaster Carr depot.

We’re currently speeding along at 123mph through the Vale of York en-route to Darlington. Sadly, the blue skies that stayed with me all the way to York are being invaded by low, dappled cloud from the East which are meant to cover the whole of Northumberland by the time I arrive. In some ways that’s not too bad as I don’t have to worry about heavy shadows and backlit shots. Even so, a bit of contrast would be nice. At least conditions will be better than on my last visit when the rain p*ssed down all day!

Apologies for the long break but I’ve just been on a whirlwind tour of the Blyth and Tyne in the company of Paul Young of Ontrackimages, who’s a former B&T signaller. Paul graciously acted as local guide and chauffer, taking me to places I haven’t visited since 1989. I’ll add more pictures (and comparison shots) later but here’s a couple to be going on with.
The old box at Marcheys House. I have a similar view from December 1989 which I’ll add later. The level crossing and signalbox at Newsham South will both be redundent. In the background’s one of the cranes working building the new road flyover. The signalbox is in poor condition.You may notice the way the wooden structure’s leaning towards the track. What you can’t see is that the inside of the box is shored up with scaffolding!

Suitably refreshed I caught a TPE service that was actually running. The Scarborough-Leeds service was diverted via Milford Jn and Castleford so entered leads from the ‘wrong’direction, but at least it got me there and wasn’t cancelled like many of its bretheren. Despite being ‘renationalised’ TPE is still a complete mess as a train service, which rather proves ownership isn’t the root of the problem. Now I’m sat on a Northern service to Chester which should have left at 19:42.

Oh joy! The Chester train’s been cancelled as there’s no Guard for it so I joined the happy throng heading from platforms 4 to 1 to catch the 20:12 to Manchester Victoria. Needless to say – it’s busy. Not just with passengers but also displaced Northern crews who’re trying to join their trains elsewhere.

Home again. Dee was happy to pick me up for the station so I wasn’t home at too daft a time, which has given me chance to download and edit a last few pictures from today’s trip.

Off again! Today’s a bright sunny day here in West Yorkshire although I was dismayed to see we’d had an early morning shower the forecast had failed to predict as I’d left some washing out overnight! Ho hum..
Now, after walking into Halifax whilst enjoying the rising temperatures I’m aboard Northern’s 08:54 to York which is taking me East towards my ultimate destination – the East Yorkshire coast and the rail line from Hull to Scarborough via Bridlington. I last traversed the line in 2019. Since then there’s been several changes which require a picture library update. I’m playing catch-up in this respect due to Covid clipping my travel wings, leading to a 2-year hiatus in documenting many lines. Sometimes I think we should add PC (pre-Covid) to the lexicon in the same way be have BC and AD.
I’m back to using Halifax after favouring Sowerby Bridge for a while. My steed awaits…
Looking at the live running schedules I suspect I’m in for another ‘interesting’ day on the railways due to late-running and cancellations. My onward connection at Church Fenton’s been cancelled so I’m going to change at Leeds. There is a direct Halifax-Hull service at 09:17 but I note the next one after that’s cancelled already. I’ll see what happens when I get to Leeds…

Sometimes, trains running late works to your advantage. I’m currently relaxing aboard a TPE service to Hull which was 25 mins late at Leeds. Catching this rather than my Northern ‘stopper’ made sense. Besides, it has tables AND plug sockets, something the dear old Northern 158 can only dream of. Plus, the tables are at a sensible height and don’t cut off the circulation in your legs.
Whilst I was at Leeds this unusual visitor rolled in on service from Sheffield. One of the very first Class 150s. Built as three cars, these units spent most of their working life in the Birmingham area until they were transferred to Northern.
12:00.
I knew it was going to be one of those days! On arrival at Hull I found my 11:21 train to Brid was cancelled. This was curious as it was shown on many systems as still running. Then the penny dropped. It ‘was’ running from Sheffield to Hull – where there was a crew change for the onward journey to Bridlington. Hull (like Bradford Interchange) is one of those locations where crews change ends, so it has a traincrew depot where the staff have different route knowledge and work different diagrams, so no-one was available to take the service forward from Hull. This meant I was kicking my heels until the next departure at 11:59, which turned out to be a 2-car Class 158 to take three trainloads of people. Nice!
It’s events like this that put so many ordinary people off travelling by train. The combination of stubborn unions who can’t see the collateral damage their dispute is causing, plus and an equally obdurate government unwilling to negotiate as its playing politics is causing the rail industry untold harm.

Apologies for the gap in updating but I’ve been busy exploring and checking out a place I’ve never really visited before and that’s never been on my ‘bucket list’ – Bridlington. Well, that was an eye-opener. I’m no stranger to UK seaside towns, I grew up in one after all – and I’ve visited them all. From Southend to Skegness, Bournemouth to Bangor. But Brid? Hmmm…
I have to be careful what I say here as some readers get upset when I talk about what some call ‘sizeism’. But we really (really) do need to talk about it. I spent half an hour around the prom and environs at Bridlington.

What I would say is that if you’re in any doubt that the UK is facing an obesity timebomb that’s going to explode on the NHS – then just spend some time here during the school holidays. Let’s just call it ‘onset diabetes on sea’ and move on – as I did – to Beverley. But before I did I garnered enough library shots that mean I shouldn’t need to darken the town’s doors for a long time – if ever.
To be fair, the town’s trying. There was some really interesting ecological landscaping around the station on the site of the old carriage sidings which was better than I’ve seen in many places – and the station staff have maintained their reputation for fantastic floral displays. It’s just a shame the famous old station pub has shut its doors for the last time.
Beverley’s a different world – and more mine. It’s an old market town with a cathedral that has a completely different atmosphere. The town was festooned with flags supporting ‘Pride’ week. Many restaurants had spilled out into the street with outside tables and people eating a variety of foods, not just fish or burgers and chips. In contrast to Brid – even the fries were skinny!
The town also boast a station with an impressive and original overall roof – although the NER footbridge is downsizing and losing its wooden roof.

Much as I enjoyed a break in Beverley and the chance to reacquaint myself with the town I had one more place to try and tick off the list. Driffield. This is another station that used to have an overall roof but that was lost many years ago. Even so, some lovely buildings remain and the local station friends group have worked wonders with restoring derelict land at the back of some of the buildings – as well as by the extended car park.
A few years ago this was nothing but rubble…
As it’s a lovely evening I feel like I could stay out and make more of it, but I need to begin my journey West as I’ve a few more busy days ahead. Besides, the day’s not over yet…

I was optimistic in hoping that the earlier spate of cancellations may have passed, but no such luck. Still, they’re a minor convenience and only a slight delay as the 20:15 Hull to Halifax is running. All I have to do is hang around for that. I’ve been in no hurry to get home as I’ve tried to make the most of the day even if there’s been frustrating moments when the best of the light for photography was lineside and not being on the actual train. Never mind, I’ll be making up for that on Thursday! Now I can relax a bit and enjoy the journey back to West Yorkshire.

We’re on our way from Leeds to Bradford and my wars ar startint to stop ringing. From Hull I was surrounded by a couple of dozen young guys (and a couple of girls) who were on their way to Leeds for a festival. Considering the fact they were drinking expensive piss in the form of small bottles of lager I can only assume either they’d been drinking all day or that they were lightweights!

Home – after walking 14.5 miles and 31,200 steps according to my Fitbit. Now it’s time to curl up in bed ready for another busy day tomorrow when I’ll add a last few pictures to this blog. Until then – goodnight!

We’re at the start of a new week so it’s back to blogging for me after taking the weekend off as it was rather a sociable one, which left me neither the time nor the inclination to type-swipe but now my nose is firmly back to the grindstone as I plan another busy week. A chunk of today’s been spent doing exactly that, working out the logistics of another foray to Northumberland on Thursday. Thankfully, the weather’s beginning to improve. We didn’t have any rain here in the Calder valley today, which feels like a minor miracle. Instead we had this strange bright orb hanging around in the sky. In a few days time we’re even meant to have temperatures in the 20s – a figure we’ve not seen for ages, so I’d better make the most of it.
Another of today’s consuming jobs was to wade through the archives to collate a collection of community rail pictures for a magazine. I sometimes forget just how large the archive is nowadays. There’s over 84,000 pictures on my Zenfolio website alone, and that doesn’t include all the other folders of filed-away images and there’s only little-old me to remember where the damn things are! With that in mind I’ve also edited, sifted and filed away a lot of the images I took last week before they start overwhelming my hard-drive and so that they’re duplicated. Even though a selection’s on my website I’m still cautious about having everything backed-up, just in case. Still, that’s all done now. I’ve even managed to parcel up some of the latest eBay sales tonight so they’ll be in the post tomorrow. All in all – a productive day.
The only question now is what the picture of the day is going to be. Oh, I know, here’s one from the archives of how Northumberland’s industrial landscape used to look like. Here’s the old west coal staithes at Blyth, seen on the 27th December 1989, when I was staying in the area with friends that Christmas.
The staithes were used as a location for the iconic 1971 film ‘Get Carter’ starring Michael Caine. Now little remains of this scene. Blyth power station closed in 2001 and has been demolished whilst the upper decks of the staithes were torn down in 1994. The railway sidings that stabled the wagons of coal are also long gone. I hope I have time to explore this area again later in the week. We’ll see…

Time to tear myself away from the comfort of home and head off to the final event of the week and a meeting in Derby with friends and colleagues before enjoying a relaxing weekend at home (although our definition of relaxing may not be everyone’s cup of tea!). Hopefully, the railways will play ball today – and I don’t have to have anything to do with TPE, which is always a good start!

So far so good! Despite an earlier cancellation my Northern service from Sowerby Bridge to Leeds arrived on time. This 3-car service via Bradford’s certainly busy – I’d reckon about 75% full but I’ve managed to find a window seat from which I can admire the rain.
11:55.
Things are looking up! I had a 20 minuter interlude at Leeds which gave me time to take a few pictures before joining Cross-Country’s 11:12 service heading for Plymouth which is made up of two 4-car Class 220s, both of which are busy. I know because I swapped between sets at Wakefield to distance myself from the hen-party who were already breaking open the Prosseco! I’ve managed to find an airline seat in the rear set which is much more civilised. We’ve just pulled out of Sheffield where the weather’s brightening up. There’s still masses of heavy cloud but there’s multicoloured layers and individual formations rather than the uniform dullness West Yorkshire was suffering from.
17:30.
After an excellent meeting and chance to reminisce with old friends it’s time to head home. The railways are still SNAFU which has meant the train I was hoping to catch to Leeds has been cancelled. Instead I’m on plan B which is an East Midlands Railway service to Sheffield where I’ll select plan B. The weather’s changed completely. There’s mow this weird blueish tinge to the sky in which a weird yellow orb hangs…

I’m late, but I’m finally heading North from Sheffield to Leeds. The irony? I’m aboard the same Cross-Country train (220031) that carried me South. Whilst I was meeting with friends it’s traversed most of the country. Now it heading back from Plymouth to where it started its day. Scotland.
Trains aside, my meeting turned into a trip down memory lane as other friends turned up. As a group we go back 15-20 years although none of us can work out where the years hsve gone.
Our group of friends is from right and left on the political spectrum. Politics aside the ome thing we care about and agree upon is the railways – and the univeral view is that the current government are awful. Then, when you have a multi-millionaire PM who flies everywhere by helicopter and has no idea of the importance of public transport is it any wonder we’re cynical?

My Cross-Country train’s managed to deposit me at Leeds – along with all those who thought they were going all the way to Edinburgh or points in-between. The train’s been terminated due to overhead line damage on the East Coast Main Line which is really going to bugger up some people’s weekend. Still, Rishi’s got a helicopter to gad about in whilst the rest of us bare the brunt of the amount of money his friends have sucked out of the public purse, so that’s alright then.

I’m now on the last leg home aboard yet another Northern Class 195.I’m not complaining, I have a table seat, power points and air-conditioned, but more importantly – we’re on time.
22:00.
Home again – and I didn’t get rained on once – which is a bloody miracle this summer! I’ve had a great day catching up with friends and talking over old times, some of which I’d forgotten about. When we think back to some of the things we and other friends used to get up to in days that were more laissez-faire it makes for some great memories and stories that will be best told when some of the main participants are pushing up daisies!
Now it’s time for me to switch off and enjoy the weekend at home. That said, expect a few blogs and lots of pictures to appear here – and there.

‘Tis a short blog from me tonight. I’ve had a long day staring at screens editing pictures from the past few days. That’s taken up most of my time, although I must admit to enjoying having a day based at home where I’ve not got one eye on a railway timetable, checking that all my connections are running to time! With that pressure off me, I could very much suit myself when I did what. Well, apart from when the weather governed some choices such as taking my daily constitutional. For once, it hasn’t rained all day. Exactly the opposite, we actually had decent temperatures and sunshine this afternoon until the rain decided to reappear this evening when it came back with a vengeance. Talk about raining stair rods! I was starting to worry that the garden would be battered to pieces. Thankfully, the cloudburst passed before we got to that stage but we’ve certainly had a sizeable chunk of August’s rainfall arrive in the past couple of days – with more to come.
Still, tomorrow’s another day, so let’s see what it brings. Other than more rain, obviously! Whilst I’ve been typing this the last batch of pictures (for now) has uploaded to my Zenfolio website. Shots have been added to many different galleries, including railway stations, railway people, Chiltern Railways, the GWR franchise, Northern, TPE as well as East-West rail and of course – HS2.
