We’ve had an absolutely glorious day here in the Calder valley as we’ve seen blue skies and warmer temperatures all day. It really does feel like Spring has arrived. Just getting out to feel the sun on my skin again (no need for winter woolies) has been wonderful. Almost overnight blossom has started to appear on trees near us, whilst the birdsong has reached a crescendo as our feathered friends realise it’ll soon be time to find a mate – and they’re on it!
What’s been less inspiring has been human activity and Trump’s ‘operation divert from the Epstein files’, AKA the undeclared war on Iran. This reached a new low today when an American submarine sank an Iranian military ship off the coast of Sri Lanka. Why? Other than the fact they could, because they had a submarine in the area? The 1,500 tonne ‘Dena’ was no threat to anyone. It had been taking part in joint exercises with the Indian and other navies 3000km away from Iran. Over 100 sailors have died. I hold no candle for the theocrats of Iran, but this seems like a completely unwarranted attack that not only demeans the US but also paints a big target on US ships not in a war zone as it sets a precedent. There’s something else that’s uncomfortable too. The US submarine – despite being in absolutely no danger from anyone – failed to assist survivors. Even German U-boat captains during world war 2 were known to help survivors of the ships that they sunk (despite the risks). This does not look good on America, but I’ve no doubt their apologists will be out in full flow.
I can’t help thinking that Trump and his acolytes are taking the USA in a very dark direction. Far from being the ‘beacon of democracy’ they now look no better than some of the countries they criticise. America’s gone from the world’s policeman to the world’s bully. I also note that the Americans don’t call this a war, it’s akin to a ‘special military operation’. Now, where have we heard that before, and who from? That SVO’s going as well as can be expected too…
We live in dark times. Well, apart from spring appearing here in the UK, obviously. So, on that brighter note, I leave you with a picture I took just down the road earlier today.

Thanks to the orange fool in the White House mine and everybody else’s weekend turned out to be rather different than planned. After weeks of military build-up, with fleets of aircraft crossing the pond from the US to Britain and the Middle-East, Trump finally decides to bomb Iran, along with his mate from Israel.
Needless to say, this has turned into a mess from day 1, not least because none of the protagonists seem to have a plan. Having killed Iran’s Supreme Leader (no loss) and many of the Iranian leadership there’s no sign that Trump knows what to do now, what the strategic aims are – or how long the war will last. Mind you, the Iranians don’t seem to have much of a clue either – other than to hurl missiles and drones around the Middle-East, hitting mostly civilian targets across the Gulf. Talk about how to make friends and influence people. Meanwhile, Russia – who’re meant to be Iran’s firm ally – send nothing but ‘thoughts and prayers’. Mind you, the hardware they sold previously wasn’t much cop. The missile systems bought at great cost to defend Tehran have proved to be as much use as a chocolate fireguard (just as they have been in defending Russian targets from Ukraine). The US and Israel are now reported to ‘control the skies’ above Tehran which is going to be causing some consternation amongst the surviving Mullahs and military. Even more embarrassing is the fact the Kuwaiti’s have proved to be better at shooting down American aircraft than the Iranians, apparently the score currently stands at 3-0.
Thankfully, our Prime Minister has stepped back from Trump’s coat-tails, learned the lessons from the 2003 Gulf War and taken the pragmatic decision to only allow UK airbases to be used by the US to knock out Iranian missile systems in order to defend British citizens and interests. Common-sense prevails.
Whilst this war is anything but something to laugh about, I couldn’t help but crack a wry smile at the antics of the UK tax-exiles in Dubai who (after slagging the UK odd as being ‘unsafe’) are suddenly expecting UK taxpayers to save their necks. That wonderful German word ‘Schadenfreude’ springs to mind. I can’t help thinking of the brave Ukrainians, who’ve endured their cities being attacked night after night, looking at these Dubai immigrants having hysteria and thinking ‘you think a couple of drones is bad’?
An unfortunate consequence of all this is that any plans I have to head out to SE Asia with any of the Middle-Eastern airlines are currently on hold until we see how all this pans out. In some ways, the timing couldn’t be better as I’ve just had a renewal notice for our annual travel insurance. Talk about making your eyes water! It’s gone up from £117 to £390. They’ve not got back to me yet when I emailed them to say ‘WTF’? but I’m assuming that it’s because I’ve now crossed over into old-fartdom by hitting 66.
So, bugger that, I’m going to be shopping around. But now I have the time to do so…
I’ll be working from home for the next few days as I’ve a lot of admin to sort out. Hopefully, I’ll have chance to get out now and then as the weather’s really looking to be improving as spring certainly feels to be in the air, which brings me to today’s picture which was taken in Halifax on Saturday. Have a crocus. In fact, have lots of them!

Today’s been another busy one here at Bigland Towers. Nearly all of it has been spent wading through hundreds more pictures to edit and caption. I’d foolishly thought I’d broken the back of things yesterday. Then I opened up another couple of picture files. Oops! I’m now far more confident that I’m where I want to be as there’s just a handful left from my Asia travels. I’m not going to post loads of links again, I’m merely going to do what I did yesterday and post one to my ‘recent’ page. I doen;t take long to work out which galleries the new pictures have gone in to.
Whilst sat at home I’ve been keeping one eye on the news (and social media), watchin the American political binfire burn. Vice-President JD Vance has done a fabulous job alienating most of Europe – and especially the UK and France with his comments about the military. He’s tried to deny it of course, but that’s just added fuel to the fire as no-one likes being taken for a fool (well, unless you’re a Reform voter: Ed).
The furore has become more interesting as it’s revealing fault-lines between various right-wing commentators, media outlets and political parties. Some, like the Daily Mail and Sun have been outraged at Vance’s words. Suddenly, the world has turned upside down and I find myself agreeing with the likes of Julia Hartley-Brewer and Dan Hodges (don’t worry, I’ve had a bath since). Even Andrew Neil is taking sense. Then temporary Tory leader Kemi Badenoch completely misreads the mood and defends Vance , who’s a ‘friend’ of hers, apparently! An amazing take when even Nigel Farage (who was better at seeing which way the wind was blowing) didn’t support him.
These are interesting times for Reform. They’re becoming split between those who slavishly support Trum p and those who can see the danger of being exposed for what they really are – Russian assets and little more than ‘surrender monkeys’ who’re riding on the back of Putin and Trump’s coat-tails. Reform MP (and millionaire) Rupert Lowe being a classic example with this tweet, which has already aged like milk.
I’ve no doubt the row will continue, stocked by the trolls and bots on social media under the command of Putin (who must be laughing his socks off).
But this row’s about to be overshadowed by the latest Trump disaster. Tariffs. Trump is starting a trade war. The world’s markets have already taken fright at what he’s doing, but – undeterred – he’s proposing to bring in more. The poor saps who voted for him are about to find out *exactly* who it is who pays for tariffs. One American TV channel has just pointed out that (overnight) a Dodge pickup has increased in price from $80,000 to $100,000 – and it’s American consumers who’ll be picking up that tab. Now American farmers are about to find out where much of their supplies come from (Canada). Of course, it’s not just the US who suffers. But I’ll tell you who doesn’t – Trumps millionaire friends who’ll be playing the stock market as they knew in advance what was coming. This is likely to be insider trading on a gargantuan scale. As the old saying goes – follow the money….
We are living in very dangerous times. The one ray of sunshine is that this is forcing Europe to unite and get its act together. There’s some very welcome signs on that front. In the meantime, batten down the hatches, the world’s in for a rocky ride…
I’ll be taking a break from the computer tomorrow as I have a dentists appointment. Weather permitting, I may venture further afield as a result.
On a brighter and more peaceful note. Here’s today’s picture – a Balinese Hibiscus flower.

I was going to title that British people but there’s quite a bit of evidence that the latest UK government petition that’s setting the right-wing world aflutter has been signed by a lot of people who’re neither British, or real.
You may ask what I’m talking about. Understandable, if you don’t live in the UK or if you don’t hang around on social media (especially the cesspit that Twitter has become nowadays) as this petition has only really existed in a social media vacuum chamber until the past 24 hours, when the mainstream media (especially the right wing outlets) have decided to cover it. So, let’s start at the beginning.
An e-petition calling for yet another general election was started on the Government’s petitions website 5 days ago, by someone called Michael Westwood. Here’s a link. Now, most of you will remember that we only had a general election back in July. Labour won it with a landslide and currently have a working majority of 259.
The petition would probably have died a death, but it’s been picked up and amplified by Elon Musk and many other right-wing commentators. So, as I type this, the number of ‘signatures’ stands at 2.4 million. It doesn’t take much to sign it. All you need is a UK postcode and a valid email address.
The right-wing are cock a hoop at the numbers and are flogging this like it actually means something. But there’s several problems – not least the fact the numbers are suspect. OK, let’s leave that one aside and pretend (just for the sake of argument) that the numbers are genuine.
In the last general election, 6.8m people were daft enough to still vote Tory. Another 4.1 million even more deluded souls voted for the ‘Fagash Fuhrer’ (Nigel Farage) and his private limited company (major shareholder, N Farage) known as ‘Reform’. That’s 10.9 million right-wing votes. So, less than a quarter of them signing a petition is hardly a popular revolt against the government!
There’s another thing. These petitions are meaningless. It’s clear some clueless souls think they lead to a vote in Parliament with a vote that could order a new general election. The reality is, they’re not even debated in the House of Commons, nor is any vote taken afterwards. They’re held in Westminster Hall and they’re little more than a talking shop. MPs are under no compunction to turn up either, which means they’re often very sparsely attended.
Now, even *if* this petition was debated in Parliament and *if* there was a vote, the Government have a working majority of 259. There wouldn’t be a cat in hell’s chance of it passing.
It seems some people are realising that this petition is pointless and have pivoted to saying it’s sending the Government a ‘message’. They’re not quite sure what that message is of course, but hey ho…
In truth, the message it’s sending isn’t the one they think it is. The real message is one of breathtaking hypocrisy, on several levels.
Remember, in 2016, almost all of these people (well, the real ones anyway) will have voted for Brexit. They’ve spent the past 8 years telling those that voted to remain that ‘you lost, get over it’. According to them, an advisory referendum that was 52-48% (with a huge number of abstentions) is inviolable and written in stone forever more, and petitions like these, which were signed by millions, had to be ignored. Only theirs is valid. Hypocritical, much? Damned right it is.
And yet, the result of a general election that Labour won by a landslide just 4 months ago should be overturned, now, despite the fact there will be another general election in just under 5 years time. So much for the ‘will of the people’, eh?
It seems that for the right-wing ‘democrats’, election results only matter when they win. Remind you of anyone? Oh, yes, the orange rapist and felon who’ll be re-entering the White House next year. And of course, who’s behind amplifying all this nonsense on social media, Trump’s chum Elon Musk! Now, hang on a minute, why are so many supposed British ‘patriots’ so happy that there’s foreign interference in UK politics? Weren’t these the people who railed against the ‘unelected bureaucrats’ of the EU or anyone from another country (Obama, Biden, et al) who had the temerity to opine about what was happening in the UK? But Musk, actively interfering? Come on in! The hypocrisy is weapons-grade.
PM Sir Keir Starmer has already burst their balloon by pointing out the fact that this “isn’t how our system works.”
There’s another interesting bit of fallout from this petition. It’s demonstrating just how irrelevant the Tory party are now. The agenda is being driven not by them but by constant noise from the right-wing media and vested-interest billionaires like Musk. It’s no wonder politics is in such bad shape nowadays.
I’ve no doubt the froth about the petition will die soon. It’s going nowhere. The right have the attention-span of a goldfish, the bots will be reprogrammed and move on to the next thing their masters deem worth their time. Besides, it’s almost the festive season. The right-wing always get outraged about Christmas and someone trying to ‘ban’ it. Imagine living your life in a state of permanent outrage, the way many of these right-wingers do?

This morning I woke up to the news that the convicted felon and rapist Donald Trump has managed to persuade over 50% of American voters to elect him the 45th President of the United States of America.
Or, to put it another way – we’re all fucked.
Because this is not just about America. Not at all. This is about the most powerful country on the planet falling into the hands of an imbecile, a narcissist opportunist who doesn’t believe in democracy, or climate change, or any of the values that are the glue holding the world together. Only himself and his cronies.
We’re all in for a dark few years. Oh, Trump will only be around for four years. It’s the blink of an eye in many ways, but the damage that he can do in that time is incalculable. The only winners in this are the billionaires and dictators like Putin. The people who’re increasingly setting the agenda and paying the piper – only in the end the money will be taken from all of ordinary mortals, as it always is.
There’s fools in this country (like Farage) who’ll be cock-a-hoop at the news. The right-wingers and supposed nationalists who are dumb enough to believe Trump is someone the UKs ‘friend’ when the opposite is true. There’s going to be some very hard lessons being learned over the next four years.
I fear for Ukraine right now. Putin will be breaking open the champagne in the Kremlin. Trump was his investment, the best President his money could buy. The EU needs to get it’s act together now and realise that NATOs biggest member is about to become a sleeping partner. Europe can no longer rely on the US for its defense against Putin’s warmongering and expansion. I hate to say this, but Europe needs to re-arm because there’s a very real danger that if Putin wins in Ukraine, he won’t stop there – as he’s made clear. NATO (and that means us, the UK) could well be in a shooting war with Russia before Trump is gone.
But this isn’t just about America, or Europe. It’s about the whole planet.
Climate change is out of control. Politicians made a commitment to limit global warming to an increase of 1.5degrees. We’re nowhere near hitting that. The current projections are that by the end of the century temperatures will have increased by 3.1 degrees. Most people have no idea how disastrous that will be – for everyone living on this rock floating in space. No-one is going to be immune. With a climate-change denier in office for four more years the chances of getting on track are the worst kind of net zero, so go see places like the Maldives (or, ironically, places like Clacton) now, because they won’t be there when your grandchildren become grandparents.
The world has just become a very much darker and depressing place…

“I woke up this morning” – is the opening line of many a blues song – only in my case this morning was more like being wrenched into wakefulness by a paroxysm of coughing and spluttering. Like many people, Dawn and I have gone down with the traditional post-Christmas bug so it’s been a much more laid back Saturday then I intended. The pair of us have been coughing and hacking so much anyone walking past the house would be forgiven for mistaking it for a TB clinic.
The winter blues are one of the reasons I normally go abroad this time of the year. Everything seems subdued and miserable after the festive season, many people rein their horns in and count the pennies they haven’t got after overspending on Christmas so towns and pubs seem quiet. Even the weather has done it’s best to contribute to the general air of doom and gloom by pissing down for most of the 2018 we’ve had so far. A brief break in London helped lift my spirits but I’ll be glad when this damned cold’s buggered off – for both of us.
Meanwhile, in the spirit of a surreal age, when an American President takes to Twitter to assure everyone he’s not nuts but one of the smartest people on the planet – I’m heading for the drinks cabinet – whilst it and I still exist. Because, when this is the infantile level of the President of the United States – and supposedly the leader of the free world, we are all, deeply, deeply f****d.
